Increasing speed on link thumbnail loading

The new thumbnail image placeholder on links (posts and chat) seem to be taking a while to refresh. Is this something we could optimise on the CL side? I imagine there are some external dependencies on the speed of the linked-to site but wondered whether it's something we can improve to avoid the feed initially showing lots of placeholders.
